Kalakuta was Located at 14 Agege Motor Road, Idi-Oro, Mushin, Lagos, Nigeria, this communal compound housed a recording studio, a free health clinic, and even a rehearsal space for his band, Africa 70.
In 1970, after returning from the United States, Fela declared himself the President of the Kalakuta Republic, proclaiming it an independent state from Nigeria.
This bold move reflected his growing involvement in politics and his desire to challenge the country's oppressive military regime.
